New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4)

PEETO offers the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) classes for both domestic and international students. NZCEL provides a clear pathway to progress your English language skills for further studies and work in New Zealand.

You will gain a nationally recognized qualification issued by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) to assist you in applying to higher academic institutions or employers.

Outcomes: 

On completion of this programme, graduates will be able to demonstrate the following outcomes:

  • understand main ideas and supporting details of moderately complex oral academic texts.
  • participate effectively in sustained spoken academic discourse.
  • understand main ideas and supporting details of moderately complex written academic texts.
  • write detailed, developed, moderately complex academic texts.

Entry requirement:

For students to be accepted into this programme they are required to:

  • Be 16 years of age or older, unless approved otherwise by PEETO; AND

One of the following:

  • Have successfully completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3); OR
  • Provide an IELTS Academic score of at least 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0; OR an accepted international equivalence.
  • Applicants will be required to undertake the internal PEETO placement Test to confirm their current level of English proficiency. This will include, but not limited to, reading, writing, listening, and speaking components.

Education Pathway:

This programme leads to New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 5) [1884].

This certificate may facilitate meeting the language requirements for many vocational and undergraduate programmes/courses and specialised fields of study requiring lower and/or New Zealand Qualifications Framework Level 5, for entrance, depending on the focus of the programme leading to this qualification.

Employment Pathway:

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4) [1883] will have the English language skills to work in positions that require:

  • interpersonal communication
  • understanding of context-specific texts of a more academic nature
  • writing records and reports
  • interactions in a team.
